1 Staple
A wool-sorting term denoting whether the wool is of sufficient strength and the fibres sound enough for making warp yarn. A collection of several tufts of wool connected together by a binder (see Tufts (wool) ———————— A term indicating the average spinning length of the fibres in a sample of raw cotton or wool, e.g., cotton may be spoken of as 1-in. staple; (2) staple fabrics is a term used for fabrics that are usually in demand. -
2 Viscose Staple Fibre In Colours
During the year 1938 supplies became available of viscose staple fibre in colours. For the wool trade there are three colours in 4.5 filament denier and staple length of 2-in. for woollen spinning, and 4-in. to 6-in. for worsted spinning. For cotton spinning five colours are available in 1.5 filament denier and 17/16-in. staple. These colours have the highest degree of fastness and have only a small surcharge for the colour. The producers state that this coloured staple fibre processes with equal facility with normal undyed staple fibre in the same range of counts, so that the difficulties normally met with in the processing of dyed fibres do not apply to these productions.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Viscose Staple Fibre In Colours

3 Viscose Staple Fibre
This is produced in exactly the same way as continuous filament viscose up to the point of spinning. Instead of making a separate thread at each spinneret, the filaments from all spinnerets on a frame are drawn together into a rope which runs into a cutter which chops the filaments into a definite staple length varying from 17/16 -in. for mixing with cotton or spinning on cotton machinery, up to 2-in. to 8-in. for mixing with wool or for spinning on wool machinery. Viscose staple fibre is also produced in various filament deniers such as 1.5 denier equivalent to cotton fibre thickness, or 3 and 4.5 filament denier equivalent to wool qualities.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Viscose Staple Fibre

4 Cotton Staple
Staple means the length of the fibre, a good staple is a long fibre, and a short staple is a short fibre. The staple may be termed the average length of the bulk of the fibres. The length of staple determines the counts of yarn that can be spun from any particular cotton. The counts and average lengths for twist are: - Up to 16's, 7/8-in. 17's to 26's, 1-in. 27's to 36's, 11/16-in. 37's to 44's, 11/8-in. 45's to 52's, 13/16-in. 53's to 60's, 11/4-in. 61's to 70's, 15/16-in. 71's to 80's, 13/8-in. 81's to 90's, 17/16-in.; 90's to 100's, 11/2-in. If the cotton is for weft yarn then about 30 per cent finer counts can be spun from a given length of staple than is possible for twist yarns. -
5 Bragg Long Staple
A variety of American cotton; the staple is long, but not of uniform length; forming large, late maturing bolls, gives 30 per cent of lint. This appears to be a true hybrid between G. Herbaceum and G. Barbadense. The staple is mostly 11/4-in., but up to 21/2-in. is obtained. -

9 American Cotton
There are over 60 varietal names mentioned in census reports of American cotton, but only a few of these are srill in common cultivation, and which have stood the test of time. These are Boyd prolific, Dickson, Herlong, Peeler, Petit Gulf and Texas Stormproof. The staple length varies from about 24 to 29 mm. and yield of lint from less than 30 to over 35 per cent. It has been found, as a rule, that as the per cent of lint increases the length of staple decreases, The qualities most used of American cotton, apart from above varieties, are known as Orleans, Texas, Allanseed, Mobile, Boweds, Benders, Memphis, Uplands, Alabama and Tennessee (see under each name) -
